Hello, I’m Darren Cronian – I write and rant about the problems that consumers face with travel.

One question I am asked regularly is why I started writing this blog, and it is a good question. In 2005, I visited a high-street travel agency. I was not impressed with their customer service and felt that the travel agent had no interest in helping me find a holiday.

My first apperance on television, BBC 1 – Rip off Britain.

I arrived home, annoyed, and wanted to rant, so welcome to the Travel Rants blog.

In the media

I have learnt a lot about the travel industry, and continue to learn. Considering I have no working experience of the industry I have been quoted in a number of national newspapers and interviewed on radio in the UK, Ireland as far away as Australia. I was filmed as part of a consumer programme which was aired in December 2009.

In April 2008, I won best travel consumer blog in the Travolution Awards.

Darren Cronian has single-handedly set the benchmark to which other consumer-focussed blogs should aspire. Controversial, relevant, thorough and, perhaps most tellingly, much better than something mainstream media organisations are trying to achieve.

My interests

My travels include New York, Sydney, Tasmania, Kuala Lumpur, Oslo and Prague. I enjoy watching sport, walking, and the outdoors, and I have a list as long as your arm of destinations I want to visit. My favourite travel moments so far are snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef, climbing over Sydney Harbour Bridge and looking at the amazing views from the Empire State Building.

Where I am based

I was born and bred in Leeds, about 2.5 hours from London by train in the county of Yorkshire. I sometimes get mocked because of my accent but I love living in Yorkshire and I am extremely proud to be from this part of the country.
